20 Things You Didn’t Know About Janine

Part of self-growth is getting to know the real ‘you’ again.

The one you may have lost in your job, your relationships, your family, or the rush of life. It’s about being open and honest with yourself and with others. So let’s go on a journey of self-reflection.

Here’s 20 Things You Didn’t Know About Me, and in return, I ask you to share with me ONE thing I don’t know about you!

I don’t have my ears pierced

Even close friends and family don’t seem to know that (I’ve been given earrings for presents quite a few times!)

I’m enjoying our engagement

D and I have chosen to enjoy our engagement rather than rushing to the altar. It feels so good now that there is so much less pressure for a date! And honestly, who can afford a wedding in Australia?!

It’s been 20 years

It is my 20-year school reunion this year. I’m undecided how I feel about this or if I will go to the reunion. I have no fond memories of high school.

I’m undecided about trying for a child

2 years ago I had decided against it, this year…well, I’m in two minds. The near death experience of your partner kinda has a funny way of changing the way you look at the world. This thing is, it’s going to take me about a year to come off of my antidepressants, and since I’m 37 this year and D 45, we better make our minds up sooner rather than later.

In saying that…

I don’t even know if I can have kids, so if we decide that the answer is ‘yes’ I’ll be getting a good check over before we get our hopes up. And if we can’t have one naturally, then that’s it. I will not subject my body to IVF – that’s my personal choice.

I want to write children’s books

I’m just disturbed by recent reports that children don’t actually read books anymore. It’s a sad state of affairs 🙁

I hated high school with a passion

I can’t think of a single moment I enjoyed. That is until Year 12 when I transferred to a senior campus and when to school with adults and other disillusioned youths. I had been going to drop out of school until then. Thankfully, I transferred, graduated, went on to University and came out the other side with a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Communications and absolutely no idea of what I would do next (aside from travel).

I refuse to read a book on an electronic device

I love real books made of a thing called paper. I love their look, the smell, the feel of them in my hand, I love seeing my collection grow in my overflowing bookshelf. After sitting in front of a computer all day, the last thing I want to do in the evening is curl up on the couch or in bed with an iPad.

Spiders

Spiders give me the heebie jeebies but I can’t stand killing them. I’m such a softy.

I wanted to be…

When I was in Year 8 when I was 12 I told a teacher during career counselling (at the age of 12?!) that I wanted to be a lawyer. She told me that I wasn’t smart enough and to do something else. Her words haunted me for years.

I love sleep way too much

I am a big klutz

I walk into walls in my house, slice my fingers, trip over my own feet. In September last year, I dropped the old bathroom sink top on my big toe. I’d been carrying it to the multi-skip bin as we were doing a big clear out and bathroom renovation. I actually didn’t tell D what I had, as it was 10 minutes into the exercise and I was so embarrassed by my clumsiness! It hurt dreadfully, but I soldiered on for a few hours until I finally took my shoe off and found a bloody, black toenail. I can assure you that the last few months have not been pleasant. The toenail finally fell off 2 weeks ago and what’s left looks damn attractive (not).

I love frogs and lizards

My Dad’s in hospital

He can’t move his right foot, had an operation on his back, and is now in severe pain and can’t walk. Sitting there today hearing his tales of the ‘health care system’ and witnessing all of the goings on in the hospital brought memories of when D had his accident in 2012. It terrifies me, and I know it terrifies him. It didn’t stop me threatening to put on my angry pants and charge in there to see the Doctor on Tuesday. If I learnt anything in 2012 it was demand access to information and answers, and to not stop till you got it. I also learnt that it’s safer at home than in a hospital.

I’m a girl who hates shoes

I have bad feet and find it virtually impossible to find comfortable shoes. I could easily live in sneakers and thongs (that’s flip-flops for those in other realms).

And I wanted to be…

At one stage whilst growing up I wanted to be a park ranger. That was part of my escape plan from Perth. I didn’t get very far.

I’ve been accused of spoiling my dog on more than a few occasions

I don’t believe I go over the top, but I do treat her very well and, well, more human than the dog I suppose (which is why she is completely antisocial when it comes to other dogs). But you see, when I grew up dog’s served a purpose, which was to guard the house, hunt, be loyal to his master (the man of the house), and to at all other times shut up and keep out-of-the-way. They weren’t allowed in the house, and if they misbehaved in one way or another they weren’t seen again. It sounds horrible, but that was the way it was in our town. That is how mining and farming communities worked. We had so many dogs, some I got attached to, some I hated, others I pitied, others that terrified me, and others my heart broke over. Which is why I have a small lap dog who eats well and has the run of the house. She gets cuddled, lies on the couch with us when we watch TV, and sleeps on the end of the bed when we sleep. She’s my little rock – she knows when I’m sad, when I’m playful, when I’m angry, when I’m tired, and when I’m taking myself to bed.  We’ve been through so much together, and I love her dearly.

I have an addictive personality

I avoid computer games at all cost, especially World of Warcraft, of which I would love to play with my friend Carly, but know that it will be a path of no return.

I am becoming a master at writing tender responses

And I secretly enjoy it. I think I may be insane…

My new business is centred around 3 things

People, writing and social media. How’s that for a teaser!

What can I say? Oh, here it is: my ears are pierced, but I never wear earrings. I bet you didn’t know this about me!

Impressive and I also hate electronic books. One thing about me? Hmmmm…I flew a plane by myself at age 16.

Now that is impressive! You have certainly lived, Marie! Oh – and I just ordered your book – paper style.

Ooooo interesting – I’d love to hear more sometime! My focus is not so much on youth but around my age, older and people starting up.
