Don’t knock the power of positivity
I was once incredibly critical about myself in every way – the depression didn’t help, but the self-deprecating thoughts didn’t help the depression either. Kind of a vicious circle really.
Affirmations
Over the years I’ve endeavoured to overcome this. One of the ways that I have done this is through the use of positive affirmations - turning my negative thinking around. After all, every affirmation is what you believe about yourself, and you can either be your own worst critic or your own cheer squad. Positive affirmations can really help turn around your state of mind!
Now I’m not saying it’s an easy habit to develop, and it can take a lot of practice, but it can be done.
How to start?
Start simple. You’re not going to change your thinking overnight. Perhaps choose to turn around one negative thought you have repetitively.
For me, it was ‘I am fat’. I’d been telling myself that since I was a young girl. How did I turn around that thought?
I started by doing the following:
- Looking in the mirror
- Focussing on a part of my body (i.e. my arms)
- Using the first person pronoun in my affirmation (I)
- Using the present tense (I am)
- Saying a positive message to myself (i.e. I have nice arms)
- Repeating the affirmation on a consistent basis
- Saying the affirmation with conviction and consistency.
It doesn’t take long to do. I find the best time to practice this is when I’m getting ready for work in the morning. In fact, that used to be the main time I would beat myself up.
Of course, there are many other affirmations you could tell yourself!
I am a success.
I have a rocking body.
I am beautiful.
I am amazing.
I am worth it.
Eventually these positive affirmations will become second nature and will result in a new positive you.
Why not give it a go?
If you successfully practice this, do you have any tips?

Hey Janine,
We used affirmation technique with our patients. One of the tehcnique which many of my patients seem to benefit from was from writing affirmative sentences while going to bed. Just writing something nice about yourself every night. It could be something that you did – no matter how small you might view it as. It might be something someone said ( a compliment) something you like about yourself, remembering something nice from your past and such.
You always go to bed with something nice and when you get up, you have good thoughts; also, you can just read something from the previous day and off to a beautiful start!
Also, what Roy says is something that works ALWAYS!

This sounds so simple but also a little crazy, telling yourself something over and over again. If I hadnt just tried it I would think its crazy but it does actually make you feel better I find!

Author Napoleon Hill writes about positive affirmations. He indicates that only words which have been strongly mixed with positive emotion have a real impact upon you. Words merely spoken aloud without much feeling have no effect. Affirmations are most effective when spoken with a feeling of enthusiasm, a feeling of joy, a feeling of love, or a feeling of faith. In regards to the last of these, the feeling of faith is the in-your-body feeling of “I believe and know this will work!” and is not merely a thought or a belief.
I totally agree to what you have said!
Just like what they say:
It’s all in the mind!

I’m glad you agree
It does take practice, but it’s well worth it!
