{this memory} is the story behind {this moment}, a weekly ritual sharing a moment in time captured forever.

This photo was taken at the 2010 Big Day Out. If you are unfamiliar with the Big Day Out, it is a festival that tours Australia every summer, with a different line-up of music artists ranging from rock bands to DJ’s.

I used to go the the Big Day Out every year in my early twenties, but stopped going after being crushed in a mosh pit, trying to see The Offspring.  I wasn’t injured, but I did develop a bit of a problem with crowds from that day onwards.

But I digress…back to the photo.

I’m the girl on the left of the photo, the dude in the middle is my brother, and the lovely lady on the right is his wife (my sister-in-law).  We had been roaming the Big Day Out (as it’s held in a really large area to allow for multiple stages with multiple bands performing at once), waiting for the next act we wanted to see to perform – it was either Dizzee Rascal or Powderfinger. Anyway, we stumbled on this thing called a ‘silent disco’ and became entranced by an entire crowd of people cutting some moves to what seemed like nothing.  Oh, and they were all wearing some big kick-ass industrial yellow headphones.  It was the funniest thing, as some people were really getting down to what seemed like nothing! So we thought we’d give it a crack.  On entering we were handed a pair of the industrial head phones (wireless), and that was pretty much it.  We followed the others flocking to the dance floor and copied them, donning the headphones, and tuning in to what everyone else was listening to – some funky beats.

The photo you see is us almost literally pissing ourselves laughing.  It was truly a memorable moment.  This is one of my all time fave photos.

  1. Love it! How come I had never heard of this! If only I could go back in time!

  2. There is such natural happiness in this photo! =) It reminds me of Charlie Todd’s Ted talk on “shared absurdity.” =)
