NKOTB
Ah boy bands…
Axl Rose
Sebastian Bach
As a teenager I was a bit of a bogan. I loved rock and roll, and managed to resist the whole boy band phenomenon whilst at high school. Whilst many of the other girls were busy ogling over pictures of Joe and Jordon from NKOTB (that’s New Kids on the Block), I was obsessing over the sexy swaggering Axl Rose from Guns n Roses and Sebastian Bach, with his luscious long locks, from Skid Row.
And then I entered my twenties. Something happened. Something crazy. I was introduced to the Backstreet Boys by my gorgeous friend Charissa. Suddenly, my powers of resistance weakened, I found myself enthralled by this group of ‘boys’, especially the eldest of the group – Kevin.
Kevin Richardson
I don’t know what happened. Maybe my hormones had kicked in late…I was obsessed. I loved to secretly watch their music videos, I bought their CD’s, Charissa photoshopped a photo of myself and Kevin, the hotty, together
I felt all funny – giggly and school girlish.
And then I met Kate, my backstreet boys soul mate. We would get together and drool over backstreet boys dvd’s and crank out their CD’s over cocktails on girls nights, much to the disgust of our friend Karina (although I think we eventually managed to bring her over to the dark side…).
Our boys
As the years past, the Backstreet Boys grew up, and so did we. That was, until 2010. I received a message from Kate one day saying that the Backstreet Boys were touring AND that they were FINALLY coming to Perth! Unfortunately by this stage Kevin had left the group, but it didn’t take much thought to agree with Kate that we should go, so we bought tickets, and our date with the Backstreet Boys was secured.

This photo was taken by Kate just before we entered the stadium to see our beloved boys. I LOOK like a giggly girl
We actually didn’t know what to expect from the concert, as the boys could have been considered past their prime, but we were pleasantly surprised. My god – we screamed and squealed and laughed and sang, and so did all the other women. We had a blast, the boys sang live AND danced, they sounded good, we remembered all of the words…Seriously, it was one of the best concerts I have ever been too, and I’ve been to my fair share! I’m not embarrassed by that thought at all.

Love this post, especially how Charissa photo-shopped a pic of you and Kevin and your giddiness at finally getting to see the Backstreet Boys perform live – so cute!
I still have the pic somewhere. I’ll try dig it out sometime
This is lovely, Janine! What happy memories, I think the same happened to me with Mando Diao, I went to one of their concerts two years ago and felt in paradise. My daughter might have thought differently!
Hehe some people just never understand.
I am not over Axl Rose. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know! As for being past their prime, honestly, who cares? Glad you had a blast.
I can’t say I’m not over him either. Every time I see the Sweet child o mine or patience video clip…ahhhh
What a fun post, going down memory lane! I was never into ‘boy bands’ in the conventional sense. I was into Spandau Ballet. I guess they’re the uptight version of boy bands? lol!
I think they would be!
