How to Embrace Hygge For a Healthy and Calm Life

Are you looking to live a healthier and more relaxed life? Here’s how to embrace the Danish concept of hygge for a calm and fulfilling existence.

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga” or “hue-gah”) has quickly gained popularity worldwide, evolving beyond its original purpose.

Starting out as a way of coping with the long, cold winters in Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, hygge – something I have embraced over the last year – has become known as a decor and lifestyle trend due to the cozy accents and activities that accompany the practice.

The Hygge Lifestyle

Even as hygge has emerged as a new popular decor and design style, this practice is a lifestyle change. In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. Enjoy the present moment, carefully cultivating your life to bring you calm and joy.

And no matter the time of year, climate, or country you call home, hygge can help you.

Self-care

The beauty of self-care and hygge is that you can craft both to suit your personal needs and tastes.

Self-care and hygge for some might be a night out with girlfriends to recharge. For others, it’s cozying up to a loved one on the couch to watch a movie. Or, one of my favourites, settling into a snug corner under a comfy blanket to read a book.

Hygge Decor How-to

Even though hygge is built for waiting out the cold, dark days of winter, it has become a decor trend for good reason.

And if you’re looking to transform your home into a space that radiates coziness and is customised to how you unwind, you will love hygge!

Here are some tips to help get you started:

  • Choose a range of ultra-soft and comfy fabrics in lots of different textures. Think of accent pillows in silks and satin, massive knit throw blankets and shag rugs.
  • Lighting is a simple and effective way to set the mood. Stick with soft light sources such as candles (real or flameless), end table lights and floor lamps to keep the vibe relaxing and calm.
  • Minimalism and simplicity are a big part of hygge. We all know clutter can add stress and make us anxious. Find an organisation system that works for you and pare down your decor to only what you need.

If nothing you have captures the look you envision, there’s no need to overhaul your current decor. Start by removing things that no longer serve you and slowly adding things that match the look and vibe you want.

The cost of new furniture and accessories can quickly add up, so don’t put additional pressure on yourself to immediately spend lots of money to achieve ‘Pinterest-perfect’. Hunting around second-hand stores for dining tables and living room furniture can become a shopping adventure while giving you a unique look for less.

Taking time to be mindful and thoughtful with choices can also make the process more fun and less confusing if you’re trying out a new design!

Selecting super soft bedding, pillows for proper support and blackout curtains can get you a step closer to being snug and well rested.

Hygge For Health

Another key element of both self-care and hygge is mental and physical health.

Furniture can get pricey, so look for affordable options that match your budget and your personal sleep style and needs. Selecting super soft bedding, pillows for proper support and blackout curtains can get you closer to being snug and well-rested.

Getting outside and enjoying each year’s season and life is amazing for staying healthy. Sleep is also a vital part of health; ensuring you get both the quality and quantity you need can go a long way in daily wellness and staying healthy.

What you surround yourself with can make such an impact on your mood, productivity and well-being.

Hygge could be the perfect option to look into if the idea of coziness speaks to you and having tangible ways of incorporating self-care into your home seems like your style!
